Phu Quoc Visa 2026 Phu Quoc Visa 2026
You can stay on Phu Quoc for up to 30 days without a Vietnam visa, but only if you stay on the island and follow the entry conditions. The moment your plan includes mainland Vietnam, a longer stay, or an unclear route, you need a proper visa such as the e-visa.
Planning a trip from India? Read the Vietnam-e-visa before you book. The Indian Embassy in Hanoi has advised caution on this exemption.
Picture this. You have found a good deal on a beach resort in Phu Quoc, you have heard that the island is visa-free, and you are about to book flights. Then a friend says, Wait, my cousin was stopped at the airport. Who is right?
Both can be right. The phu quoc visa exemption is real, but it comes with conditions that are easy to miss, and the details change depending on how you get there and where you go afterwards. This guide walks you through it using real travel situations instead of legal jargon, so you can match your own plan to the right answer.
What the Phu Quoc Visa Exemption Is (and Is Not)
Phu Quoc is an island in southern Vietnam. By a special policy, foreign visitors, regardless of nationality, can enter and stay on the island for up to 30 days without applying for a visa in advance. That is why people search for phu quoc visa free, visa for phu quoc, phu quoc island visa and even vietnam visa phu quoc. All of these searches lead to the same short answer: the island has its own rule, and that rule has limits.
Here is the part that surprises people. The exemption is about the island, not about Vietnam. Think of it as a day pass for one amusement park, not a ticket to the whole city.
- It is: a free, no-application stay of up to 30 days on Phu Quoc.
- It is not: a visa for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or any other mainland destination.
- It is not: extendable. If you want longer, you need a visa.
The Rules in Plain Words
- Arrive from abroad. The exemption is meant for visitors coming directly into Phu Quoc by air or sea from outside Vietnam.
- Stay on the island. Do not plan trips to the mainland on this exemption.
- Stay within 30 days. Count from your date of entry, and check the exit-by date you are given on arrival.
- Leave properly. Plan to depart Vietnam from Phu Quoc. Airlines may ask to see a ticket showing you are leaving within 30 days, so carry one.
- Have a healthy passport. Vietnam generally expects at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date, and the US and UK governments both say so. Keep blank pages and make sure the passport is not damaged.
Sources describe these conditions with small differences, and the rules for connecting flights are the most confusing part. That is why we suggest checking your exact route with our team before you pay for tickets.
Six Travel Situations: What Applies to You?
Find the plan that looks like yours.
| Your plan | Visa needed? | Our take |
|---|---|---|
| A. Direct international flight to Phu Quoc, stay on the island, leave from Phu Quoc, within 30 days | Usually no | The clearest case for the exemption |
| B. Connect through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi on the way to Phu Quoc | Unclear, can be risky | Confirm before booking |
| C. Enter mainland Vietnam first, then take a domestic flight to Phu Quoc | Yes | The island exemption does not cover this |
| D. Phu Quoc plus any mainland city | Yes | Get an e-visa |
| E. Staying more than 30 days | Yes | Get a visa before travelling |
| F. Entering Vietnam overland (for example from Cambodia) and then going to Phu Quoc | Yes | Land entry counts as entering the mainland |
Situation A: The clean case
You fly directly from outside Vietnam to Phu Quoc International Airport, enjoy the beaches, and fly out from the same island within 30 days. This is the textbook use of the exemption. You do not apply for anything in advance, and you receive an entry stamp showing your allowed stay. Check the date on it.
Situation B: The connecting-flight puzzle
Many travellers do not have a direct flight to Phu Quoc, so they connect through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Some sources say this can still qualify if you stay in the airport’s international transit area and continue to Phu Quoc without formally entering mainland Vietnam. In practice, though, this is where travellers report problems, including questions at check-in. The Indian Embassy’s advisory also warns that entering the mainland, even briefly, ends the benefit. If your route involves a connection, please do not assume. Ask Travel On Call to check the exact flights and your passport before you book.
Situation C: Mainland first, island second
If you clear immigration in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and then take a domestic flight to Phu Quoc, you have entered the mainland. You then need a valid Vietnam visa for the whole trip.
Situation D: Just one day in the city
A day trip to Ho Chi Minh City sounds small, but without a mainland visa, airlines will not let you board a domestic flight off the island. If there is any chance you will leave Phu Quoc for the mainland, apply for the Vietnam e-visa in advance.
Situation E: The long stay
The 30 days are a hard limit. The exemption cannot be extended. If you may stay longer, apply for a proper visa before you travel.
Situation F: Overland entry
Crossing a land border into Vietnam means you have entered the mainland, so the island exemption does not apply.
Phu Quoc Visa for Indian Travellers: What to Do
This is the question we hear most from Indian customers. The phu quoc visa for indian passport holders works under the same island exemption: up to 30 days if you meet the conditions. India is not on Vietnam’s general visa-exemption list, so Indians need a visa everywhere else in Vietnam. Our Vietnam visa for Indians guide covers the full picture.
In April 2026, the Indian Embassy in Hanoi issued an advisory, reported by Business Today. As reported, it recommends that Indian travellers get an appropriate Vietnam visa before visiting Phu Quoc, even if they plan to stay on the island. The reasons it gives are practical:
- Medical emergencies or flight disruption. You may need to travel to a mainland city such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for treatment or onward travel. Without a mainland visa, this can become difficult.
- Lost passport. If a passport is lost, you cannot simply leave. You must wait for an exit permit from local authorities, which can take around three to five working days or longer.
- Itinerary changes. A change of plan to see another city is not possible without a visa.
Our practical advice for Indian travellers: if your trip is a short beach holiday on a direct flight, the exemption may work, but the e-visa is the safer choice because it covers the whole country and removes the “what if” risks above. If you are connecting through the mainland, please contact us first. You can also compare options on our Vietnam visa requirements guide.
Myth vs Fact
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Vietnam is visa-free if I am going to Phu Quoc. | Only the island is covered, and only under the conditions above. |
| I can hop to Ho Chi Minh City for a day. | Not without a valid Vietnam visa. |
| I can extend the 30 days from the island. | The exemption itself cannot be extended. A different visa is needed. |
| A connection through Hanoi is always fine. | It depends on your route, and travellers report issues. Confirm first. |
| No documents are needed because it is visa-free. | You still need a valid passport and may be asked for onward travel proof. |
Your Arrival Day, Step by Step
- At check-in abroad: keep your passport and onward ticket ready. Airlines may ask about your visa status.
- On landing at Phu Quoc: go to immigration with your passport. You are processed under the island exemption if you qualify.
- Get your stamp: check the exit-by date carefully before you walk away.
- During the stay: keep your passport copy and stamp details safe. Stay on the island.
- Before leaving: depart on or before the exit-by date.
If your route touches Ho Chi Minh City, also ask us whether the digital pre-arrival declaration applies to you. It has been required at Tan Son Nhat Airport since 15 April 2026 and is separate from the visa.
Before You Book: A Quick Checklist
- Is my flight direct from outside Vietnam to Phu Quoc?
- Am I sure I will not visit the mainland, even for an emergency stop?
- Is my total stay comfortably under 30 days?
- Do I have a ticket leaving Vietnam from Phu Quoc?
- Does my passport have at least six months of validity and blank pages?
- Have I checked the latest rules with a trusted source?
If you answered “no” or “not sure” to any item, the simplest fix is to apply for the e-visa. It is valid for up to 90 days, costs US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry, and is applied for on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn. Processing usually takes about three working days. Our e-visa guide explains each step, and our visa consultancy team can check your form before you pay.
