Do you need an e-visa for Vietnam?

You need an e-visa if your passport is not on Vietnam’s visa-exemption list, or if you plan to stay longer than your exemption allows. The e-visa is open to all nationalities, so it works as the default option for tourists, business visitors and people visiting family.

Citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland can stay up to 45 days without a visa under a policy that runs to 14 March 2028, according to the Embassy of Vietnam in India. Other nationalities have shorter visa-free stays of 14 to 30 days.

  • US, Canada, Australia or India passport: you need an e-visa.
  • Visa-free passport, staying within the allowed days: no visa needed.
  • Visa-free passport, staying longer: e-visa, up to 90 days.
  • Crossing land borders or leaving and re-entering: multiple-entry e-visa ($50).
  • Working in Vietnam: you need a sponsored visa through an employer, not an e-visa.

What is the official Vietnam e-visa website?

The Vietnam e-visa official website run by the Vietnam Immigration Department under the Ministry of Public Security. Type the address into your browser yourself instead of clicking a search ad, because look-alike sites often rank above the real portal. Vietnamese state media also names thithucdientu.gov.vn as part of the same official e-visa system, as reported by Vietnam+.

Fake visa sites advertise express visas, same-day approval or guaranteed visas. Do not judge a site by its ending alone: the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok lists look-alike addresses such as vietnamvisa.gov.vn as fake. Always check the full address letter by letter.

Red flags:

  • It charges more than $25 or $50 as a government fee.
  • It promises same-day or guaranteed approval.
  • It asks for bank details or documents the official form does not ask for.
  • It lists only an email address or a PO box as contact.

Some agents are real businesses that submit your application and charge a service fee on top. That is legal, but it is not the government fee, and you can apply yourself for $25 or $50. If you want help with the form, see our visa consultancy service or browse our other visa guides.

Vietnam visa cost: how much does the e-visa cost?

The official Vietnam visa cost for the e-visa is $25 for a single-entry visa and $50 for a multiple-entry visa. These Vietnam visa charges are the same for every nationality. Both are valid for up to 90 days, are paid online by card, and are non-refundable, even if your application is declined. The Vietnam e-visa cost on a private agent’s site is usually higher because it includes a service fee.

How long does the Vietnam e-visa take?

The standard processing time for a Vietnam e-Visa is approximately 3 working days after the application and payment are properly submitted. However, processing may take longer if information is incorrect, documents need further review, or public holidays such as Tet affect processing schedules. TravelOnCall recommends applying at least 7 days before your planned departure to allow extra time for unexpected delays.

  • 7 or more days before travel: Recommended timeframe for a more comfortable application process.

  • 3–5 days before travel: Apply as soon as possible, but allow for potential delays.

  • Less than 3 days before travel: High risk if your visa has not been approved. Do not assume it will arrive before departure.

Vietnam Digital Arrival Information: What Travellers Should Know

Vietnam introduced a Pre-arrival Information (PAI) system at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on 15 April 2026 as a pilot programme. The system allows international travellers to submit selected travel and immigration details online and receive a QR code after completing the declaration. Official guidance describes this pilot as voluntary, so travellers should check the latest requirements before departure.

You can access the official system here: Vietnam Pre-arrival Information Portal.

Please note that the pre-arrival declaration is separate from the Vietnam e-Visa application. Completing one does not replace the other where a visa is required.

Why do Vietnam e-visa applications get rejected?

Most rejections and delays come from data errors: a wrong passport number, a name that does not match the passport, an unreadable photo or scan, wrong dates, or an entry point that differs from where you actually cross. The fee is not refunded if an application is declined. If rejected, fix the error and submit a new application with a new fee.

Can you extend a Vietnam e-visa?

In most cases you cannot extend a Vietnam e-visa from inside Vietnam. To stay longer, leave and apply for a new e-visa, or switch to a different visa type if an employer or sponsor is involved. Some websites claim a one-time extension is possible. Sources disagree, so confirm with the Vietnam Immigration Department before relying on one. Overstaying is penalised with fines.
